ILA 2024 is the XXVIII Portuguese Congress of Hand Surgery and the XIV Ibero-Latin American Congress of Hand Surgery, taking place in Coimbra, Portugal, from October 3 to 5, 2024.
Dear colleagues,
It is with great honor and pleasure that we announce the joint holding of the XXVIII Portuguese Congress of Hand Surgery, with the XIV Ibero-Latin American Congress of Hand Surgery in Coimbra, on the 3rd to 5th of October 2024.
This unique event is the result of the joint work of the Portuguese Society of Hand Surgery and the Ibero-Latin American Hand Surgery Group (ILA) and will also have the presence of the German Society of Hand Surgery (DGH) as a guest society. It will be a congregating congress, from an academic, institutional and scientific point of view, with the guaranteed presence of several Latin American scientific societies.
Scientific prestige and quality will be one of the pillars of the congress, resulting in a program that includes high-quality presentations and debates, with the presence of opinion leaders, addressing the most recent innovations in hand surgery, in balance with the historical and tribute to the pioneers of our area. We believe it is a unique opportunity to deepen knowledge and improve clinical practices. We also hope to provide an environment for sharing and exchanging experiences and learning, thus promoting a strong networking component among a broad and diverse international community.
The event will not just be limited to conference rooms, as it will certainly provide moments of conviviality, celebration and strengthening of relationships, in communion with the recognized spirit of a city of Humanity: Coimbra, an emblematic city in history and academic teaching, which will complete the congress in a perfect way.
We hope to be able to count on you at this special moment where science, camaraderie and passion for hand surgery will meet in an inspiring environment.
We promise to welcome you with all the affection and friendship in Coimbra, for an unforgettable congress.

One of the most important cities in Portugal, Coimbra, beautifully embraced by the Mondego River, was once the capital of the Portuguese kingdom and continues to be a deeply fascinating city, owner of a glorious History, magnificent monuments and historical landmarks. The ancient University of Coimbra, classified as UNESCO World Heritage site, is a lighthouse of knowledge, as well as an enduring symbol of the Portuguese-speaking world.
Coimbra is located between the cities of Porto and Lisbon. By car, via the A1, the journey takes around 2h00 from Lisbon and 1h30 from Porto. It is also possible to reach Coimbra by train (check fares and timetables on the CP website www.cp.pt) or by bus via Rede de Expressos (www.rede-expressos.pt).
Coimbra truly has it all: one of the most prestigious universities in the world, the University of Coimbra; lavish gardens, such as the iconic Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra or the romantic gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas, where the immortal love of King Dom Pedro and Inês de Castro took place; imposing monuments and churches; fascinating museums; historical cafés where some of Portugal’s most prestigious writers met to discuss the most challenging questions and the inescapable academic traditions that so evidently define city’s own identity.
There are also several charming boutique hotels, inviting restaurants, the one-of-a-kind Portugal dos Pequenitos, a theme park for kids that recreates Portugal in a miniature scale and so many other enchanting spots that tell endless stories.
Coimbra has that magical spell of an historical city with eyes on the future! This spell lasts forever.
